Izidora sat breathlessly beside me, flushed from another day’s worth of victories, our skin a hair's breadth from each other as we watched some of the local Night Fae fight hand to hand. Part of my duties for the past few days had included assessing the strengths and weaknesses of each volunteer from the village, then assigning them to different rotations. It was an opportunity to teach Izidora the finer points of fighting, and I pointed out moves that worked well and ones that were sure to get her killed. She watched with rapt attention, often asking questions or asking for clarification, absorbing it all like the night sky absorbs the light of the dying sun.

Yet my mind often drifted back to the battle between Izidora and Viktor a few days prior, and how I nearly went mad with the need to jump between their blades and defend her with my life. It took a white-knuckled grip on the splintered wood to let her fight her way through, and fucking Fates was she incredible. The resilience she displayed when her back was against the fence was nothing short of extraordinary, her willpower an endless well to rival her magic. She was going to be a force to be reckoned with, and the thought of bending a knee to her as my queen one day pounded against my skull and sent heat straight to my groin.

There was only one problem – no Night Fae could call flames to their swords like she did.

Mid-afternoon, Izidora, Vadim, and I walked back to Zirok House, chatting about the pros and cons of different weapons. Izidora revealed she liked shorter weapons that allowed her to move with more agility, and we promised to work with them more. With each passing moment, I loved Izidora even more, her mind as brilliant as her body, her spirit unbroken despite the abuse she suffered at the hands of the Iron Fae. Having her sleep in my bed only fueled my obsession, and despite the fact that I had yet to fully lay claim to her, there was no doubt in my mind I would do anything to make it happen – even if it meant going against tradition and decorum.

When we entered the house, my father called to us from the long hall beyond the dual staircase where his study lay. He sat behind his desk, pieces of parchment scattered across it and another resting in his hand, his crinkled eyes skimming the paragraphs.

“Kazimir, Izidora, Vadim,” he addressed each of us individually. “You look like you’ve been having fun.”

“We’ve been working hard, that’s certain,” Vadim said. “You should have seen Izidora best Viktor again earlier. I’m sure Kriztof will regale us with the story at dinner tonight.”

“I look forward to hearing it,” my father replied. “Izidora, why don’t you wash up while I speak with Kazimir and Vadim. I thought we might pick up today with more history of the Night Realm.”

“Sounds like a plan to me. Thank you,” she smiled, then headed upstairs, her light trot my sole focus as she departed.
